Reading a bulb listing
Four figures decide whether a bulb is right, and wattage is the least useful of them.
- Fitting
- B22 bayonet and E27 screw do not interchange. Check the holder before the brightness.
- Lumens, not watts
- Brightness is lumens. Watts only tell you what it costs to run — an LED at 9W can beat an old 60W bulb.
- Colour temperature
- Warm white for living rooms, cool white for kitchens and work surfaces. Mixing the two in one room is what makes lighting look wrong.
- Dimmable or not
- A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer circuit flickers and dies early. It is stated per product; where it is not, assume not dimmable.
